The GWGVFD Junior Fire Brigade is a program designed for teens ages 14 - 17.
The membership is limited to 15 members at any given time.
The JFB's main focus is to teach fire safety using our Fire
Safety House. Every
year this group of teens touches thousands of children with their messages
of "Get,
low and go" and "Stop, drop and roll". In 2002, at
the Montgomery County Fair, they taught over 1300 kids fire safety in just
ten days!
The Junior
Fire Brigade also supports the GWGVFD's fund raising efforts
by running birthday parties at Station 8 twice a month.
In addition to their community service efforts, JFB members are eligible to
take classes at the Public Safety Training Academy and may become an Emergency
Medical Technician-B at the age of 16 after a rigorous training class. Upon
reaching the age of
17, JFB
members
are
encouraged
to "roll
over" to our regular membership but may stay in the JFB until high school
graduation if they prefer.
Through the years, we have seen many teens pass through our program. Some are
still successful members in the GWGVFD. Others have gone on to career firefighter
positions. We have several in pre med or nursing programs, in the military,
teaching in public schools, etc. Whatever they have become in life, we like
to think that the GWGVFD JFB helped to shape them into the
productive adults they have all become.
